As the sixty-first feature on the Fresh Dose. blog, we are introducing the ever-so-talented Jill Blutt.
Each week Fresh Dose. will be featuring a new artist from our playlist on our blog to highlight great independent talent.
We asked Jill Blutt five questions to help us understand a little more about the song titled 7 Seconds.
1: Choose 3 words that best describe you as an artist?
melancholy, dreamlike, atmospheric
2. What was the story or inspiration for writing this record?
7 Seconds is a bittersweet ode to a younger version of myself which seeks to capture the tenderness of growing up queer/neurodivergent/an outcast in a society that cruelly gave me the false impression that weird was ever be a bad thing to be. 7 Seconds explores the dichotomy between growing up too fast and trying to act one’s age, invoking compassion for my struggle as well as a quiet rage towards the world that perpetuated it
3: Shout out section - who’s your favourite independent artist we should listen out for?
I’ve been really loving Grace Ives recently—it’s so cool to see someone making pop music in a way that feels fresh and subversive while still being authentic and accessible. The experimental quality comes across really natural and not forced or overly-quirky.
4: What’s your other favourite record on this week's top 20? Why?
I really love the track Jar of Honey by Blush FM — it’s really tastefully understated and does a good job of capturing a sexy dreamy vibe reminiscent of artists like Julee Cruise or Dean Blunt/Inga Copeland.
5. Our sister organization @hyper_tribe is all about creating the next generation of artists, what piece of advice would you give to them that helped you the most in your music career?
I think the one piece of advice I wish that others had stressed more for me is the importance of making meaningful social and collaborative connections within the industry and adjacent industries. I’ve always been the introverted type and for many years thought that I could best achieve my artistic potential if I isolated myself to focus on my art, but I realize more and more that some of the best creative opportunities come from building relationships with other creatives who challenge you to your fullest and help to expand artistic vision and open professional doors
